Teleki Castle

The Teleki Castle in Posmuș (Șieu commune, Bistrița-Năsăud county) is an imposing Baroque ensemble erected by the noble Teleki family. The estate was acquired around 1680 by Mihály Teleki, Chancellor of Transylvania, while the main wing was built between 1750 and 1752 and completed around 1760 with the gatehouse bastion.

Rebuilt after the fire of 1823 and enlarged over the years, the castle has recently been restored by the Bistrița-Năsăud County Council with European funding. Today it is open to visitors: the gatehouse bastion bears the coats of arms of the Teleki and Haller families, while inside you will find period furniture, stove tiles, painted dowry chests, and panels on the family's history and local legends.

Set on a hill and surrounded by a park of centuries-old oaks — one of them more than 500 years old — and close to the Crama Liliac winery, the castle makes an excellent half-day outing, especially for guests staying a few nights at La Hanul Cailor.
